Can't run 1.16.0 on Vista 32-bit, ATI X1400
« on: November 16, 2007, 08:45:18 PM »
I cannot run at all on Vista 32-bit, ATI X1400 (on a Dell laptop), driver version "8.360.0.0 - ATI Mobility Radeon X1400" as reported by GPU Caps Viewer.

Hyperion3D 1.16.0, when launched, draws its window but nothing in the OpenGL area, and immediately says "Not Responding" and never does anything.

I saw this about 6mths ago with an earlier version of Hyperion3D on this same laptop, exact same behaviour, I could not get it to run. And that was also with Windows Vista, but a previous install (I just reinstalled from scratch a few weeks ago). A colleague's laptop (almost identical but with a Core 2 duo instead of my original Core duo), same video card (X1400), but running XP SP2, worked fine.

Any idea what is going on?

Catalyst 8.360.0.0 = Catalyst 7.4: very very old version  :nop!:

Try the latest ones, Cat7.10 (8.421.0.0): http://www.ozone3d.net/smf/index.php/topic,802.0.html
I've managed to run Hyperion on Vista 32bits with a Radeon hd 2400 pro / Cat7.10 and with a Radeon X1950xtx / cat 7.10.
But there is still a little problem with Radeon and Catalyst drivers: Hyperion crashes at the closing (atiglxx.dll).
This crash never occurs with NVIDIA/Forceware.

Anyway, here is Hyperion 1.16.0 under Vista with a radeon x1950xtx (same generation than you x1400) and Cat7.10:

and here is the Flip 3D with GPU Caps Viewer 1.3.0 and two instances of Hyperion 1.16.0:

I think once the cat7.10 will be installed, it should be ok. Let me know.

OK. I can try to update, but...

I grabbed 7.11 display driver ONLY from here: http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx?p=vista32/common-vista32
And installed it. No problems in the install log.
But my display driver version remains 8.360.0.0
So I guess I'm not installed and updated. Any ideas? Is there a different driver package I should be using for a laptop with mobility X1400?

Yes it's true, with laptops it's still a pain to update graphics drivers:
http://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894&task=knowledge&questionID=26978
"Currently AMD does not provide any driver support for Mobility Radeon™ products. All driver and technical support for Mobility Radeon™ products is provided by the original laptop or notebook manufacturer. The drivers that are available for download at ati.amd.com are for desktop products only."

Shame on AMD/ATI
From many forums I visited, the opengl support for Mobility Radeon is nonexistent  (for example in french: http://www.commentcamarche.net/forum/affich-3002532-ati-radeon-vista-no-opengl).

But the solution seems to be here: http://www.driverheaven.net/modtool/     :king:
Hope that will help you.
