Back To Past: Cirrus Logic VLB CL-GD5428 with… 1Mb of Graphics Memory!
I found in one of my old cases (powered by an Intel 486 DX 33, yeah!) this Cirrus Logic CL-GD5428-80QC-A video card. This is a VESA Local Bus (VLB) graphics card equiped with the incredible amount of 1Mb of graphics memory (and I’m sure that some young geeks can’t believe that one day, video cards had only 1Mb
of less of memory…). I’m not sure but I believe the only thing that was accelerated was the rendering of some Windows 3.1 widgets…
And here is the PC that was around this Cirrus Logic vga card:

Wasn’t that from the time where VGA was just emerging and games that didn’t work in the terminal used a staggering four colours?
I wonder how much we better everything got (for real) since those days. As far as I can see it’s still a trick of playing old enough games on new enough hardware for decent framerates.
Also, does it work when fit in a regular ISA slot?

Mode 13 was in fact 320*200, ie 64000 bytes.
320*240 exceed 64KB ( Vram window…and realmode offsets for that matter
But I guess you know this…
It’s just my way of saying Hi.
(On topic : If i’m not mistaken the Vesa local bus was some uncommon proprietary standard. Never saw one but it was said to rock.)
